CARROM HISTORY IN THE MAKING

CARROM DEMONSTRATION DURING OLYMPIC COUNCIL OF ASIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The International Carrom Federation and Asian Carrom Confederation led by Mr. B. Bangaru Babu and myself organised demonstration of carrom for displaying the intricacies of the game to the members of Olympic Council of Asia during their General Assembly held at New Delhi in 1997. Most of Olympic delegates tried their hands on carrom and took keen interest in the game. President of OCA, Shiekh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah and Secretary General of OCA, Raja Randhir Singh also played carrom. The then Union Minister for HRD / Sports, Mr. S.R. Bommai also witnessed exhibition of carrom skill. All delegates were presented informative brochures on carrom and key delegates were presented souvenirs.

In this demonstration, the then General Secretary of Delhi Carrom Association, Mr. R.K. Mudgal and other carrom personalities like late Mr. R.K. Tandon, late Mr. R.P. Gupta, Mr. Vikram Sharma and Mr. Sanjeev Bhatnagar extended their support in exhibition of carrom skill.

Demonstration is the way to go to promote the game of carrom either in big scale or even small one. The initiative by the personal or associations involved with their time, money and energy is priceless. We as carom lovers should support and encourage others to get involve directly or indirectly.

Demonstrations only inadequate but requires appropriate planning and ongoing programs. Lastly what we need to do is follow up the programs seriously to strengthening with experience people behind it.

We need people who can press the pedal to the new horizon and bring to another level. First step we need to create the community among fans towards to establish the game. From there start the ball rolling and we will see the fans will be gradually increase. We have to start somewhere in order to go further and we should start now.

We hope one day with widely expose carrom eventually gained enough popularity to become an official sports in as small as Asian game and as big as Olympic game. This is not the gimmick or dream but we have to plan something in order to move forward.
